Event on the “World Water Day”

Hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, an event was held on the occasion of the “World Water Day”.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Alper Öner, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, made a presentation on “Drought and Its Effects on Türkiye”.

Dean Öner started his words describing drought and emphasized that water is vital for all living things. He also pointed out that the same situation applied to the earth. Stating that the drought was a critical threat directly or indirectly affecting human life, health, socio-economic and ecological systems, Dean Öner said that especially long-term drought events negatively influenced agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry, underground and aboveground resources, access to drinking water, and energy production, thus monitoring the drought phenomenon and making plans against it became obligatory. Underlining that raising social awareness was essential, Dean Öner emphasized that they had to take measures as soon as possible so that the society could understand the importance of water and the future generations could access drinking water.

In his presentation on “Water Efficiency and Sustainable Use of Water”, Assoc. Prof. Şükrü Taner Azgın, ERU Sustainability Coordinator and a Faculty Member at the Faculty of Engineering, underscored that the first thing that came to mind was civilization while talking about water, and that all great civilizations in history settled around water.

Saying “Nature is speaking”, Assoc. Prof. Şükrü Taner Azgın stated that glaciers were the black box of nature; for this reason, scientists went to glaciers, opened bottom artesian wells, and obtained findings about what the nature did in previous years.

After speeches, the event continued with a question and answer session.
