Making the opening speech of the ceremony, our Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Altun stated that the main mission and vision of Erciyes University is student-oriented, R&D-oriented and social contribution-oriented. He said: “In student-oriented activities of our University, we attach great importance to the fact that our students, within the scope of internship mobilization carried out by the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, spend one semester in the industry sector and that they do their internships in very active institutions, especially within the defense industry companies. Moreover, it is very important for us that they also do their internships in a university-industry, university-student and student-industry cooperation triangle. We also witness the happiness of our students at the end of these activities.”

Underlining that ERU has always made a name for itself in terms of R&D studies, Rector Altun continued as follows: “I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Aykut Özdarendeli, who always continues to work with great care, for TURKOVAC vaccine. While carrying out these studies, it is necessary to express that we attach great importance to the outputs that will contribute to our country. Considering R&D studies, it is extremely important for us that Technopark at our University is always in the top five and our university is among the outstanding technoparks in Türkiye among the universities. We are carrying out significant projects in cooperation with the industry, especially through the transfer office, and we wish this cooperation to continue progressively.”

Thanking academic and administrative staff for their contributions to the achievements of ERU, he said: “I wholeheartedly would like to tell that these achievements are gained with the support of 2200 academic and 4800 administrative staff. I want to thank all of you for your efforts and solidarity.”

After the speech of our Rector, Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Memduh Büyükkılıç gave information about the student-oriented activities of the Municipality. Mayor Büyükkılıç said: “I hope that Erciyes University, a research university, will make new discoveries. Kayseri is probably the only city that exhibits the best examples of public, local and university cooperation and will be referred to as the city of benefactors when describing cities. From this point of view, I would like to state that we all experience the honor of serving Kayseri.”

After the opening speeches, Prof. Dr. İsmail Koyuncu, Rector of Istanbul Technical University, gave a lecture on “Sustainability and Green Economy”. Drawing attention to the existence of sustainable development in every part of our lives, Rector Koyuncu said: “Sustainable development exists in culture, art, labor and time all of which should be evaluated as a whole. When we analyze the concept of sustainability, we see that the concepts of environment, society and economy have been dealt with separately. The economy is independent on its own merit, the environment has been left independent and defenseless against incoming effect, and the society has tried to do what it can within the framework of its own consciousness; however, in sustainable development, the economy, environment and society need to be intertwined. At the first stage, junction points need to be formed and sustainability is the junction point of these three facts. Is this the ultimate target? It is not. If we want to move towards a good environment and green economy, the target needs to be even bigger. Here, we are heading towards the third point. Economy needs to be in the society and the environment; in other words, we need to move towards a completely environment-oriented society and economy. In this sense, for a sustainable society and economy, determination of the market economy depending on the ecosystem and society is actually the ultimate goal in sustainability that we need to reach. In this regard, the concept of green economy has started to be on our agenda recently.”

After Professor Koyuncu’s speech, our Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Altun presented a plaque to him.

The ceremony ended after Rector Altun presented the certificate of sapling donation to Rector Koyuncu on the occasion of the “250 Thousand Saplings in the 250th Year” campaign, organized within the scope of the 250th anniversary events of Istanbul Technical University and supported by ERU; in addition, our Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Oktay Özkan presented the certificate of donation for the saplings donated by the graduates of Istanbul Technical University from Kayseri.
