Good News from Prof. Dr. Aykut Özdarendeli about the Effectiveness of 3 Doses of Turkovac Vaccine against the Omicron Variant

Prof. Dr. Aykut Özdarendeli, Director of the Vaccine Research, Development and Application Center of our University, participated in a talk program called “TURKOVAC Vaccine Studies” within the scope of the Central Anatolia Career Fair 2022 (IKAF’22) events hosted by our University. In his speech at the event, Professor Özdarendeli said that 3 doses of TURKOVAC vaccine are effective against the Omicron Variant.

Our Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çalış, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Recai Kılıç and Prof. Dr. Mehmet Sıtkı İlkay, Secretary General Murat Yenisu, academicians and students attended the event held at Erciyes Culture Center.

Professor Özdarendeli gave information about the Vaccine Research, Development and Application Center.

He said: “As the Vaccine Research, Development and Application Center, we are the first vaccine center of Türkiye. As a compact center with a biosafety level three, we have been the first vaccine center of this country since 2015; thus, you must certainly have infrastructure, experiences and studies so that you can respond to such pandemics. Why Erciyes University? Because these vaccine studies were started by 25-26 groups and Erciyes University is a step ahead and has this eco-system. When you bring such an ecosystem together, things go on fast and get easier.”

Giving information in his speech about the domestic Vaccine TURKOVAC, developed against Covid-19 by our University, Professor Özdarendeli thanked the Ministry of Health, Health Institutes of Türkiye and our Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çalış for their support during the studies. He said: “Being the ninth country to produce vaccine under pandemic conditions with TURKOVAC, producing TURKOVAC, the production of which is ongoing, around one million doses per month, and trying to increase the capacity are all a success story. I do not regard TURKOVAC as a vaccine. It becomes a brand and model of our country. It will be a good model of University, public and private sector cooperation. I am sure that our country will respond much faster to future pandemics.”

Talking about the effects of TURKOVAC on the variants, Professor Özdarendeli said that 3 doses of TURKOVAC vaccine are effective against Omicron variant. He said: “Mass production of TURKOVAC continues, but we continue to work as a center. As is known, variants appeared. First, Alpha dominated. Then, the delta really created a circulation in the world. When one variant emerges, it suppresses the other. People start to get infected with the new variant, but the protection of vaccines is at a certain point in this sense. Now, it has been known that the Omicron variant has been affecting since November. We also carried out studies with variants. After we isolated the Wuhan virus, we, as a center, also isolated the Alpha, Delta and Omicron variants. We conducted the efficacy studies of TURKOVAC against these variants. We have already said that we have achieved a hundred percent success against Alpha and Delta Variants before. We have now shown that three doses of TURKOVAC vaccine are very effective against Omicron variant. We also found that three doses of TURKOVAC vaccine against the Omicron variant are considerably protective.”
