Panel on the “Meskhetian Turks on the 80th Anniversary of the Exile”

Governor’s Office of Kayseri, ERU Faculty of Tourism, Kayseri Branch of Turkish Hearths and Anatolia Azerbaijan Education, Culture and Friendship Association organized a panel on the “Meskhetian Turks on the 80th Anniversary of the Exile”.

Governor of Kayseri Gökmen Çiçek, ERU Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Altun, Provincial Gendarme Commander Brigadier General Hakan Dedebağı, Vice-Rectors M. Hakan Poyrazoğlu and Prof. Dr. Cevdet Kırpık, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Prof. Dr. Kenan Güllü, Provincial Police Chief Atanur Aydın, Provincial Director of Culture Assoc. Prof. Şükrü Dursun, Provincial Director Turkish Employment Agency (ISKUR) Ayşe Ak, Provincial Director of Family and Social Services Arzu Cıngır, Provincial Director of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Sibel Livdumlu, Kayseri Turkish Hearth Branch Chairman Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ünal, Chairman of Anatolia Azerbaijan Education, Culture and Friendship Association İsmet Taymuş, academics and students attended the panel held at the conference hall of the Faculty of Tourism.

During the event, the guests first toured the photography exhibition on the “Meskhetian Turks on the 80th Anniversary of the Exile”. Then, they attended the panel.

Making a speech at the opening of the panel, Governor Gökmen Çiçek said: “There is something I always say: Being a Turk requires a price, remaining a Turk requires a bigger price. If you want to remain a Turk anywhere in the world, you will pay a price.”

Rector Altun said: “The love for one's homeland and the love for the land is not a feeling that can be exchanged for anything. In other words, you can express these deportations with simple sentences such as moving from point a to point b in terms of location. However, it is not easy to erase the culture and history there.”

Fuat Uçar, Secretary General of the World Association of Meskhetian Turks, said that the exile experienced 80 years ago was unjust and inhumane.

Kayseri Turkish Hearth Branch Chairman Prof. Dr. Mustafa Ünal stated in his speech that the aim of the panel was to remember the painful day and pass it on to future generations in a more thoughtful way.

Haydar Habiboğlu, a student at the ERU Faculty of Letters, said: “As the Meskhetian youth, we always want to state that Ahiska is the eternal and everlasting home of the Turks.”

Following the opening speeches, the panel started.

During the panel moderated by Prof. Dr. Remzi Kılıç, a faculty member at the ERU Faculty of Education, Secretary General of the World Association of Meskhetian Turks Fuat Uçar, Asst. Prof. Rasim Bayraktar from the Faculty of Theology/Giresun University, Dr. İbrahim Hasanoğlu from the Department of International Relations/Akdeniz University and Researcher Writer Dr. Azad Dedeoğlu gave information to the participants about the Meskhetian exile.
