Workshop on Educational Management in Emergency Cases-1: Communication Skills

Within the scope of 2023 Trainer Training Program by the Quality Commission Continuous Improvement Study Group, Workshop on Educational Management in Emergency Cases-1: Communication Skills was held at our University. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Altun, our Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Oktay Özkan, Prof.Dr. Sultan Taşcı and Prof. Dr. M. Hakan Poyrazoğlu, Senate Members and academics attended the event held online. Making a speech at the opening of the workshop, our Rector Prof. Dr. Fatih Altun wished Allah’s mercy upon those who lost their lives in the earthquake, and a speedy recovery to the injured.

Giving information to the participants about the earthquake that happened in our country, our Rector said: “Aftershocks are acting in conformity with a serious decay curve. When there are plastic and elastic displacements in the process as a result of such large earthquakes and the movements in large plates, it is inevitable that there will be possible new triggers and earthquakes so that some of them can come back to their place. However, the magnitude of these earthquakes is usually within certain limits. Considering the earthquake that occurred in Kayseri yesterday evening, the presence of small earthquakes is also a discharge of energy. It is the emergence of large stress accumulation of the stress that emerged as a result of the compression there. It will be more appropriate and correct if we define these small-sized earthquakes as overcoming with small ones in the sequence of earthquakes we experience.”

Stating that we would heal our wounds together, our Rector underlined that they had to do their best in order to do their part and talked about the works they carried out as a university after the earthquake.

He continued as follows: “In this process, hospitals of our university worked devotedly in terms of healthcare. They contributed significantly both to the treatment process of coming patients and to the earthquake zone. The contributions of the faculty members of the Civil Engineering Department of our university, especially in estimating the damage in the region and revealing the faults in the buildings there, with damage assessment and sample breaking are still ongoing. We fulfill our responsibilities accomplishedly in the region. In addition, we also host the earthquake victims in our guesthouses and staff residences. May Allah not show and not let us experience such great pains again.”

Giving information about the distance educational activities conducted by our University in his speech, our Rector said: “While our country is dealing with the issue of earthquake, educational process needs to continue. In this context, we are in coordination with the Council of Higher Education.”

Emphasizing that they, as academics and educators, should go through this process more vigorously by updating their knowledge, our Rector drew attention to the importance of the workshop and thanked those who contributed to the organization of the event.

After the speech of our Rector, presentations were made respectively by Prof. Dr. Saliha Demirel Özsoy, a faculty member of the Psychiatry Department, on “Mental Health in Mass Trauma and Disasters”, and by Assoc. Prof. Murat Başarır, Co-head of the Public Relations and Publicity Department, on “Method of Effective Communication”, in the workshop moderated by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alçı, Coordinator of Quality Commission.
